Passepartout Duo’s work investigates new ways to listen to and connect with sound. Reassessing the tools they use to create their music, the group is continually developing a specialized and evolving ecosystem of handmade musical instruments that they use to compose and to perform concerts. Passepartout Duo is formed by pianist Nicoletta Favari (IT) and percussionist Christopher Salvito (US/IT).

The enchanting power of objects goes beyond ‘their geometric reality’, even when they are inadvertently forgotten or misplaced. Here is a small archive of musical instruments mapped through their place of belonging in the village.
They were introduced to the two musicians by the locals, and sometimes lent to them for a few days. From the church bells to the children’s toys, these instruments were all worth being played and listened to one more time. Their voices were then orchestrated and reunited in this soundtrack.

While in Viisoara for our first week, we decided to explore the village from the lens of its musical instruments - and truly it "takes a village" to make music! One of the most obvious places where we sought music at first was the church, where the organ seems to be ready to play but in fact stays silent and is probably broken. The condition of being broken or a bit tattered seems to be shared by most of the instruments that we managed to collect so far. Toy pianos, guitars, a flute, a harmonica, a synthesizer. Broken, unused, forgotten, misplaced, sometimes completely lost: these instruments seem to represent to us a small part of the soul of this village.
În Viisoara pentru prima săptămână, am decis să explorăm satul prin lentila instrumentelor sale muzicale - și într-adevăr „este nevoie de un sat” pentru a face muzică! Unul dintre cele mai evidente locuri în care am căutat muzică la început a fost biserica, unde orga pare să fie gata de cântat, dar de fapt rămâne tăcută și probabil că este spartă. Condiția de a fi rupt sau puțin zdrențuit pare să fie împărtășită de majoritatea instrumentelor pe care am reușit să le colectăm până acum. Piane de jucărie, chitare, un flaut, o muzicuta, un sintetizator. We started wondering what might desperately be needed to be considered for an archive in the village? The organ of the church seemed to indicate for us the path, and so we started tracking down the musical instruments that belong to the locals. First with the help of the local teenagers, and then with some extra Google translate, we approached whoever we met on the street. Most of the people believed that nobody would own any sort of instrument, but soon enough we borrowed a guitar, a harmonica, a recorder, and so on. We particularly liked that people had often gone and searched for them, and also dusted them off. Even if our work was just to make people dust off their old instruments, or maybe even the memory of them, it could have been a success. But when we did manage to get a hold of them, we also used them for composing and recording new music.
Building our own musical instruments is usually the way that we make our work, so it has been very special for us to what was available here instead and shared willingly by the people. Populating our workspace with all of these temporary donations made it feel very special. We felt like we were waking up some old instruments, and maybe if their owners can now listen to the music they contributed to make, they will hesitate one second longer before storing the instruments away once more.
Am început să ne întrebăm de ce am fii putut avea nevoie cu disperareluat pentru o arhivă în sat? Orga bisericii părea să ne indice calea, așa că am început să urmărim instrumentele muzicale care aparțin localnicilor. Mai întâi cu ajutorul adolescenților din localitate, apoi cu niște Google translate în plus, am abordat pe oricine ne-am întâlnit pe stradă.
